A hair dryer that still moves air but has gone cold has not usually died. In most cases a safety device has done its job, and the question is whether it will reset or whether something behind it has failed.

What is inside, in one paragraph
A dryer is a motor, a fan, and a coil of resistance wire. Air is pulled through a rear grille, driven past the hot coil, and pushed out of the nozzle. Between the coil and the mains sit one or more thermal protection devices whose only job is to cut the heating circuit if the air stops carrying heat away fast enough.
That is why a blocked dryer goes cold rather than catching fire, and why the fault very often clears itself.
Work through it in this order
- Check the rear filter first The grille at the back collects lint and hair, and it does so gradually enough that you will not notice. A restricted intake starves the airflow that carries heat away from the coil, and the thermal cut-out responds by disconnecting the heater. Most filters twist or clip off; clean it and try again. This is the single most common cause.
- Let it cool completely Many cut-outs reset themselves once the body cools, but not instantly. Unplug the dryer and leave it for fifteen minutes before deciding it is broken. If heat returns and then fails again after a few minutes, the cut-out is working correctly and something is still restricting airflow.
- Check the heat and speed switches independently Dryers separate heat setting from fan speed. A switch knocked to a cool setting, or a cool-shot button that has stuck down, produces exactly the symptom you are seeing. Move each control through its full range.
- Look at the cord where it enters the handle This is where flexing concentrates. A cord that has to be held at an angle to work, or that produces intermittent heat when moved, has damaged conductors inside the insulation. Stop using it — this is a shock and fire risk, not an inconvenience.
- Test the socket, not just the dryer A dryer drawing full heat pulls far more current than the fan alone. On a marginal circuit or a long extension lead, the heater can fail to run while the motor still turns. Plug directly into a wall socket before concluding the dryer is at fault.
- If none of that restores heat A thermal fuse has most likely opened permanently, or the element has failed. Both sit inside a sealed mains appliance, and neither is a repair a guide can walk you through safely.
Whether to repair or replace
Thermal fuses are cheap parts, but reaching one means opening a sealed mains housing and reassembling it correctly. Weighed against the price of a new dryer, the sensible answer for most people is replacement — and if the dryer is still under warranty, opening it ends that warranty.
Making the next one last
Clean the rear filter regularly rather than when it fails. Store the cord loosely coiled instead of wound tightly around the handle, which is what breaks conductors at the strain point. And note that the American Academy of Dermatology recommends the lowest heat setting that gets the job done, letting hair partly air dry first — advice that reduces both hair damage and the thermal load on the dryer.
