A lamp that cures one gel perfectly and leaves another soft or wrinkled is rarely broken. Gels and lamps are matched systems, and the commonest cause of a bad cure is that the two were never designed to work together.

Gels are tuned to a wavelength
A gel hardens when a photoinitiator inside it absorbs light and starts the reaction that links the polymer together. Photoinitiators are selective: each one absorbs strongly over a narrow band of wavelengths and barely responds outside it.
Older UV lamps used fluorescent tubes that emitted across a broad band. LED lamps emit a much narrower band. A gel formulated for a broad-spectrum UV tube may contain a photoinitiator that an LED lamp simply does not excite — the light is there, but it is the wrong colour for that chemistry. This is why “UV gel” and “LED gel” are not interchangeable labels, and why some products are sold as suitable for both.
Check these before blaming the lamp
- Match the gel to the lamp type Read what the gel manufacturer specifies: UV, LED, or both. A gel that names only UV will often underperform in an LED lamp regardless of how long you cure it. Time does not fix a wavelength mismatch.
- Check the layer thickness Light has to reach the bottom of the layer. A thick coat cures at the surface and stays soft underneath, which shows up as a nail that dents under pressure or lifts within days. Thin coats, cured separately, are the fix.
- Look at the pigment Dense, dark and heavily pigmented colours absorb light before it reaches the depth of the layer. Manufacturers often specify longer cure times for particular shades for exactly this reason.
- Check hand position The light is not even across the chamber. Fingers held at the edge, or a thumb cured at an angle, receive less light than the centre. Many lamps specify curing thumbs separately.
- Count the lamp’s hours UV fluorescent tubes lose output well before they stop lighting up. A tube that still glows can be delivering a fraction of its original intensity, and the first symptom is that thicker or darker colours stop curing properly. Manufacturers publish replacement intervals; a tube that looks fine can still be due.
- Check for a residual tacky layer Many gels cure with an intentional sticky inhibition layer on top, removed with a cleanser. A tacky surface is not always an undercure — check whether your product is supposed to leave one before treating it as a fault.
When the lamp really is the problem
A lamp fault usually shows as a pattern rather than a product-specific failure: nothing cures properly regardless of brand, a section of the chamber consistently underperforms, or the timer ends early. If one brand fails and others are fine, the lamp is likely working and the mismatch is chemical.
A note on nail health
The American Academy of Dermatology recommends taking breaks from gel manicures and avoiding peeling gel off, which removes layers of the nail plate with it. Repeated cycles of filing, curing and removal do more damage to nails than any single step, and a lamp that cures properly the first time means fewer cycles.
