Nail drill bits and speeds: what each one is for

Nail drills and UV lamps

Electric nail files come with a handful of bits and a speed dial, and very little explanation of either. Used on the wrong setting, the same bit that shapes an enhancement will thin a natural nail in seconds.

Material tells you how aggressive it is

Carbide bits cut, with flutes that shave material away. They remove product quickly and are intended for enhancements rather than natural nails. Diamond bits abrade rather than cut, with grit bonded to the surface, and are used for finer work around the cuticle and for shaping. Ceramic bits sit between the two and generate less heat than carbide at similar removal rates.

Sanding bands are disposable abrasive sleeves over a mandrel. They are the cheapest option and the one most often used past the point where they should be replaced — a worn band generates heat without removing much.

Grit is the number that matters most

  • Coarse grit Fast removal of product. Never appropriate on the natural nail plate.
  • Medium grit General shaping and removing bulk from enhancements.
  • Fine grit Refining, smoothing, and work near the cuticle where control matters more than speed.
  • Very fine and buffing Finishing the surface. This is the range for anything touching the natural nail, and even then sparingly.

Speed is not power

Higher RPM does not mean more removal. It means the bit passes the same point more often, which mostly produces heat. Most work sits well below a device’s maximum, and the top of the dial exists for specific tasks rather than as a default.

The practical rule is to use the lowest speed that removes material at a controlled rate, keep the bit moving continuously, and never hold it in one place. Heat builds where the bit dwells, and the nail plate conducts that heat to the nail bed underneath.

Direction matters

These devices spin in one direction and usually offer a reverse setting. The direction determines which way debris is thrown and how the bit behaves against the nail; the reverse setting exists so the tool works the same way on the opposite hand rather than as a preference. Using the wrong direction makes the bit skate rather than cut, which tempts people to press harder.

Pressure is the wrong lever. If the bit is not removing material, the answer is a coarser grit or a fresh band, not more force.

What to keep away from the natural nail

The natural nail plate is thin, and material removed from it does not grow back quickly. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends against forcefully pushing back or cutting cuticles, and against practices that thin the nail — advice that applies directly to drill work near the cuticle line.

If you take one rule from this: coarse carbide never touches the natural nail. Everything else is a matter of judgement; that one is not.

Bit hygiene

Metal bits are reusable and must be cleaned and disinfected between people. Sanding bands are single use and cost very little; reusing them across people is both a hygiene problem and a heat problem, since a dull band works by friction rather than abrasion.
