UV or LED: which curing lamp do you actually need

Every LED nail lamp is a UV lamp. That sentence confuses people, and the confusion is why so many gels fail to cure in a lamp that was perfectly good.

The naming is misleading

“UV lamp” in nail work conventionally means a lamp using fluorescent tubes, which emit across a broad band of ultraviolet wavelengths. “LED lamp” means a lamp using light-emitting diodes, which emit over a much narrower band — typically at the boundary between ultraviolet and visible light.

So the distinction is not ultraviolet versus not-ultraviolet. It is broad spectrum versus narrow spectrum. Both emit ultraviolet, and the FDA’s general guidance on ultraviolet exposure applies to both.

Why gels care

A gel cures when a photoinitiator inside it absorbs light and starts the reaction that hardens the polymer. Photoinitiators are selective: each absorbs strongly over a particular range and barely responds outside it.

A gel formulated for a broad-spectrum fluorescent tube may contain a photoinitiator with an absorption peak that a narrow-band LED lamp simply does not reach. The lamp is working, the gel is fine, and nothing happens — because the light is the wrong colour for that chemistry. Gels sold as suitable for both contain photoinitiators, or a blend, that respond to both.

  • Read what the gel specifies, not what the lamp claims The gel is the constraint. A lamp advertised as universal cannot excite a photoinitiator that does not absorb at its wavelengths.
  • Check cure times per product The same lamp needs different times for different gels, and darker and more heavily pigmented colours generally need longer because pigment absorbs light before it reaches the base of the layer.
  • Match the lamp to how you work LED lamps generally cure compatible gels faster and their diodes last far longer than fluorescent tubes. Fluorescent lamps handle a wider range of older gel chemistries. If you use one product line, match the lamp to it. If you use many, a lamp covering both is the safer purchase.
  • Watch tube age on fluorescent lamps Tubes lose output long before they stop lighting. A tube that still glows can be well below its original intensity, and the first sign is that thicker or darker colours stop curing properly. Manufacturers publish replacement intervals.

The heat spike

Some gels produce a sharp, brief burning sensation during curing, usually a few seconds into a thick layer. That is not the lamp being too powerful in a general sense; it is the curing reaction itself releasing heat, concentrated because the layer is thick and cures rapidly.

The fix is thinner layers, and on lamps that offer it, a low-heat or gradual-start mode that ramps intensity rather than starting at full output. Pulling the hand out and putting it back is a worse solution: it interrupts the cure and can leave the layer partly hardened.

What to look for when buying

A lamp that publishes its wavelength range is telling you something useful. One that publishes only wattage is not: wattage describes electrical consumption, not the light that reaches the nail, and a high-wattage lamp with poorly placed diodes can cure less evenly than a lower-wattage one designed well.

Consider also the shape of the chamber. Lamps that cure four fingers but require thumbs separately are the norm; a lamp that claims to cure a whole hand including the thumb in one pass is making a geometric claim worth testing on a single nail before trusting it with a full set.

Nail health outlasts any lamp

The American Academy of Dermatology recommends taking breaks from gel manicures and never peeling gel off, because peeling removes layers of the nail plate with it. It also advises moisturising the nails and cuticles, especially after removers, which dry the nail.

Most of the damage attributed to lamps actually comes from the cycle around them: filing to prepare, soaking to remove, and peeling when the removal is rushed. A lamp that cures correctly first time reduces how often that cycle runs, which does more for nail condition than any choice between UV and LED.
