You have followed the schedule, you have not missed a session, and the hair is coming back exactly as it did in week one. Before assuming the device is faulty, it is worth checking the three things that make a light-based device do nothing at all — because all three are properties of you and the device together, not of the device alone.

First: is your hair a target at all?
These devices work by delivering light that is absorbed by melanin in the hair and converted to heat at the follicle. No melanin means no absorption, no heat, and no effect. Light blonde, red, grey and white hair contains very little of it.
This is not a limitation of home devices specifically — it is how the technology works, and it applies to clinic equipment too. If your hair falls into those categories, no number of sessions and no intensity setting will change the outcome. Second: is the intensity level actually doing anything?
- Check what level you are using Many people settle on a low level in week one because it felt safer and never move up. Manufacturers publish level guidance against skin tone and body area; a level chosen for comfort rather than from that chart may be below the threshold where anything happens.
- Check whether the device is firing at all A handset that is being held slightly off the skin may be refusing to fire while you believe it has. Listen and watch for the flash confirmation your model gives, on every pulse rather than occasionally.
- Check coverage, not just time Overlapping passes leave gaps, and gaps regrow normally. Working in a deliberate grid, rather than freehand, is the difference between treating an area and treating most of it.
- Check the lamp count If your model counts flashes and the cartridge is near or past its rated life, output may have dropped well before the counter reached zero.
Third: are you removing the target between sessions?
Shaving between sessions is fine and expected — it removes the hair above the skin while leaving the shaft inside the follicle, which is what the light needs to reach. Waxing, epilating, threading and plucking are the opposite: they pull the hair out of the follicle entirely, leaving nothing for the device to act on for weeks afterwards.
If you have been waxing between sessions, that alone explains a course with no result, and no amount of additional sessions compensates until the growth cycle is left intact.
What a working course actually looks like
Results are gradual and easy to miss from day to day. What normally appears first is not bare skin but a change in density and texture: fewer hairs per area, finer and softer regrowth, and a longer interval before shaving is needed. Clearing, where it happens, comes later and unevenly.
Photographs of the same area in the same light are the only reliable way to see this. Memory reliably fills the gap with whatever you expected.
When to stop and ask someone
If your hair carries pigment, you have used the level your chart specifies, you have shaved rather than waxed, you have covered the area properly, and eight to twelve weeks have produced nothing measurable, the sensible next step is a conversation with a dermatologist rather than another course. Professional equipment operates in ranges home devices cannot reach, and a clinician can also tell you whether hair growth itself has an underlying cause worth investigating.
