How often you actually need to use an IPL handset

IPL and hair removal

Almost every home IPL handset ships with the same shape of schedule: a run of sessions every one to two weeks, then a longer gap, then occasional top-ups. It reads like an arbitrary marketing decision. It is not — it is an attempt to work around a biological constraint that no device can get past.

Why the schedule exists

Hair does not grow continuously. Each follicle cycles through a growing phase, a transitional phase and a resting phase, and follicles across an area are never synchronised. At any moment, only a portion of the hairs in the patch you are treating are actively growing.

Light-based hair removal works by heating the follicle through the pigment in the hair attached to it. A follicle in its resting phase has little or no hair in it to absorb that light, so it is effectively invisible to the device. Treating it changes nothing.

This single fact explains the entire schedule. You are not treating your leg once; you are treating it repeatedly, catching a different subset of follicles each time as they rotate into their growing phase. The gaps between sessions exist to let the next subset arrive.

What the phases mean in practice

  • The initial run Typically four to twelve sessions at one- or two-week intervals, depending on the device and the body area. The interval is short enough that you keep catching new follicles as they enter the growth phase, and long enough that skin recovers between sessions.
  • The plateau After the initial run, results stop improving noticeably. This is expected, not failure. Most of the follicles that were going to respond have responded, and the ones that remain are either in long resting phases or carry too little pigment to be affected.
  • Maintenance Occasional sessions, typically monthly or less. Follicles that were only partially affected recover over time, and hair that was never a good target — light, fine, grey — continues as before.
  • Different areas run on different clocks Growth cycles vary by body region. Facial hair cycles faster than leg hair, which is why manufacturers often specify shorter intervals for the face and longer ones for legs. Applying the leg schedule to the upper lip wastes sessions.

Why using it more often does not help

Treating the same patch twice in three days does not reach twice as many follicles. The follicles that were resting on day one are, in the overwhelming majority, still resting on day three. What has changed is that the skin has had less time to recover from the last session, which raises the risk of a reaction without raising the yield.

The temptation is understandable, especially in the first few weeks when nothing appears to be happening. But the constraint is the growth cycle, and the growth cycle does not respond to enthusiasm.

What “permanent” means here

Regulators define permanent hair reduction as a long-term, stable reduction in the number of hairs regrowing, measured at intervals after a full course of treatment. Note what that definition does not say: it does not promise the removal of every hair, and it does not promise a permanent end to treatment.

A realistic expectation for a home device is a noticeable thinning and slowing across a treated area, with some hairs persisting and periodic maintenance required indefinitely. A device that promises total, one-and-done removal is promising something outside how the technology works.

What to track instead of counting sessions

Photographs beat impressions. Take a picture of the same area, in the same light, at the same distance, before your first session and every fourth session after. Density changes are gradual enough that daily observation misses them entirely and memory fills the gap with whatever you expect to see.

What you are looking for is not bare skin but a change in density and thickness: fewer hairs per area, finer hairs, and a longer gap before shaving is needed. Those changes usually appear before any visible clearing does.

When the schedule is not the problem

If you have completed the full initial run at the correct intervals and see no change at all, the schedule is not what is limiting you. The likely explanations are that the hair carries too little pigment for the device to target — very light, red, grey or white hair contains little melanin — or that the device’s intensity is set too low for the area, or that the device is not appropriate for your skin tone.

None of those is fixed by more sessions. All of them are worth checking against the eligibility guidance for your specific model before spending another twelve weeks.

A note on shaving between sessions

Shaving between sessions is normally expected and is not a setback. What matters is that the hair is not present above the skin at the moment of treatment, because hair above the surface absorbs energy where it does nothing except heat the skin. Waxing, plucking and epilating are a different matter: they remove the hair from the follicle, which removes the target the device needs. Manufacturers generally ask you to stop those well before starting a course.
